Tales of Beadle the Bard by JK Rowling

Anyone who has read Harry Potter Book 7 recognizes the name Beadle the Bard, as well as the book Tales of Beadle the Bard. JK Rowling actually wrote the book and recently auctioned off one of the seven handwritten copies. Who bought it? Amazon.com did for a whopping £1,950,000. I converted that to Philippine Pesos based on today's exchange rate and it's PhP 161,136,706! Golly gee, that is a LOT of money. What a way to raise money for charity.

For all of us poorer folks who can't afford to get a copy, Amazon did a VERY detailed, SPOILER filled review. Click here to check it out.

You gotta love Amazon :)

P.S.
To the Spoiler police... I'm excused from reading a spoiler filled review because I'm never going to afford to read the actual book anyways :P
Blood Diamond

I don't particularly like "serious thinking films." When you're forced to read serious cases and think about big issues every single day, you just want to relax during your down time and stare stupidly at the tv/movie screen or read a good book that talks about a happier, safer world.

But this movie totally ROCKED!

For one thing, the acting was superb. I thought Leonardo diCaprio was terrific in the Departed, but his performance in Blood Diamond as smuggler Danny Archer was even more compelling. I wouldn't call myself a fan before, but I definitely admit to being a fan now! Then there's Djimon Hounsou, who played Solomon Vandy -- the man who found the diamond and whose family was torn apart by war. His acting as the anguished father moved me to tears. Jennifer Connely completes the cast as uber-hot report Maddy Bowen, who helps Solomon find his family, reunites Archer with his humanity, and eventually exposes the trade in conflict diamonds.

Aside from the acting, the sto...

Happy Valentine's Day

I haven't painted anything beyond the usual greeting card in years. So it was rather nice to pick up my brushes again. Course, painting a semi-senti-pa-cute picture while listening to the most sentimental playlist in my iPod is not exactly the smartest thing to do on the evening before Valentine's Day... but I just couldn't help myself. Hehe :)

Happy Valentine's Day <3

UP Pride at the UAAP: Track and Field

We didn't win overall first place but we still bagged a whole lot of medals! :) FEU was overall first, with UST and Ateneo coming in second and third respectively.

It was a record breaking season for UAAP Track and Field. Almost every event ata, may new record! Javier set the new record for the decathlon with 5,971 points. And he broke the record for Javelin with 60.66 meters... the record was set 45 years ago with 57.96 meters. :D

Watching Track and Field is an interesting way for a sedentary person to spend a Sunday afternoon. Dami nga lang boys in short shorts and cycling shorts. Traumatizing. HAHAHAHA! :)

Romance isn't dead! Yehey!

I was at the Post Office last Monday, at 8:15 in the morning. I was on my way to the Land Registration Authority (again) to do some work for the office, but I was early so I decided to stop by the Post Office first and drop off my mail.

I chose the counter closest to the entrance... which turned out to be the metered stamps counter. As soon as I got there, I saw a little old man turn away from the counter and walk off. He was clutching a bundle of letters in his hands.

When he left, the lady in front of me asked the lady at the counter, "Bakit daw?" The counter lady answered, "Di raw kasi stamps eh. Kelangan daw stamps."

"Bakit, kasi Valentine's?"

"Oo ata."

Awwww. I like to think that he didn't want his love letters to bear the corny normal metered stamp stickers. There really is something rather romantic about receiving a letter from far away with a beautiful stamp on the envolope. Well, okay, maybe I'm the only one who finds it romantic. :)&...

Petron C5 (northbound)

I spent two of my Saturdays this January at the Petron Service Station waiting room because Dylan, my '93 Sentra, was making weird noises. I wish that I could say that it was a fun and enjoyable experience. Too bad I can't. No girl likes to spend her first sweldo on something as practical as car maintenance. However, I can honestly say that while having my car fixed was not exactly a joyful experience, at least it was bearable and easy enough to endure.

I first discovered this Petron branch last summer. My car was overheating while I was stuck at the C5 toll booths. The staff found a LOT of things that were wrong with my car, not just the fact that it was overheating. At that time, I was also having trouble with my aircon. The mechanic mama took Dylan to told us it couldn't be fixed without spending a lot of money. Well, the Petron guys (specifically Mang Jun) fixed it at relatively low cost. Ever since that summer, I've been a loyal customer at Petron C5.

The staff are...

Office Welcome Party and Mickey's Bday

Too lazy to put these pictures into separate albums. Hehe. Konti lang naman eh.

7th Floor Welcome Party
January 17, 2008
The denizens of the 7th floor threw us a "Welcome to Work Party". So... to say thanks, we sang them a song. Kung gusto niyo sumipsip sa mga partners ng law firm niyo, kantahin niyo ito:

I'm on the top of the world, looking down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the high that I've found, ever since we came around
[Insert law firm's name] put me up on top of the world!!!

Mickey's Birthday Dinner
January 19, 2008
It was Mickey's birthday last 17th, so we celebrated last night. Dinner was at La Maison, Greenbelt 5. The Pepper Steaks were excellent! Yum yum yum :D And we watched National Treasure and The Chipmunks... both movies we thoroughly enjoyed. Fun night

Missing the Kick Off

I missed the centennial kick off!!! Wah!!!

And to think I'm such a die hard UP fan. :( I didn't see the skydivers... or the torchbearers... or the fireworks... or the hundreds of UP students/alumnae singing UP Naming Mahal (with feeling)... Boohoo :(

Pero okay lang... wala naman Eheads eh. If the Eheads were there, it would have been unforgivable to miss the celebration. But they weren't. So I can still forgive myself and say, "Sa next event na lang."

PLEASE let that next event be a UP concert with the Eraserheads as one of the main acts. Please Please Please. How can there be a UP celebration without one of the best bands UP has ever produced?!

Sana ibalik ang musika. :)

LIGAYA (my favorite eheads song) :D

Mouse Guard

My first graphic novel... how apt that it be one about heroic mice :D

This superbly illustrated series tells the story of the honorable mice who stand as guards for the many mice colonies. The one that I have is "Mouse Guard: Fall 1152," which is a compilation of the first 6 volumes. The first time I held it in my hands, I felt like a little girl again, holding my first ever picture book. It's just so beautiful!!! Reading it is like walking into a water color world full of adorable looking but brave warriors. There's this scene where Lieam is looking up at a snake, ready to do battle, and I just can't help but marvel at how cuddly but fierce he looked. (Yes, I can go on and on about how cute rodents are)

And it's not just the art that makes this such a terrific read. The story itself is engaging... full of sacrifice, mystery, intrigue, and betrayal. It will keep you entertained and enthralled for hours.

All in all, this is definitely one book worth the shelf space :) ...

Yay, Me! I made a Sans Rival! :D

Apparently, I CAN bake! Yay! Mama documented my attempt at making her Sans Rival (hence the blurry pictures). I think she couldn't quite believe what she was seeing herself. Granted, she helped me a lot, but I really did a lot of this on my own. She gave me a pop quiz after and I answered ALL the questions :D

See, this is how to make mama's Coffee Sans Rival (her cousin, my Tita Pacit, actually gave her this recipe). Sorry, it's not step by step... we were kinda busy...

Measure the ingredients. Note that the coffee has to be Cafe Puro. I'm not exactly sure why, but it's the way it's done in my family. Besides, I just follow the recipe...
I am not meant to cook (or bake?)

In between producing the Christmas play, working on Luke 18, and preparing for the season's festivities, I've been typing my mother's recipes. I'm going to compile them and print them out and give them to my siblings for Christmas.

Some of them are actually quite decently written -- she went OC a couple of years back and typed them using Wordstar. But her handwritten recipes...

They drive me nuts.

Mama's handwriting is almost the same as mine, because we both come from that high school that teaches all its students to write the same. But for some reason... I just don't get some of the words! And if I do get the words... I don't understand what they mean! For example... here's something that was completely alien to me:

Except for egg whites dont invert pan - don't grease - put cut rite.

That phrase can be found in her recipe for chocolate cake. She told me the only reason I don't get it is because I don't know anything about cooking or baki...

The Last 5 Years

The Last 5 Years tells the story of Jamie and Cathy... from their first date to the final breakdown of their marriage. But its story telling is unique... Cathy starts the play lamenting the end of their relationship, and moves backwards in time... while Jamie starts it off with their first date and ends with goodbye. The songs were solos, except for the marriage proposal song.

Beautiful play... and I'm not just saying that because my best friend had the lead role.

Mahar, I have no idea if you'll be able to read this, but I thought you guys did a terrific job :)
