Climbing the WQ Scale

Blog EntryI am not meant to cook (or bake?)Dec 5, '07 11:28 PM
for everyone
In between producing the Christmas play, working on Luke 18, and preparing for the season's festivities, I've been typing my mother's recipes.  I'm going to compile them and print them out and give them to my siblings for Christmas.

Some of them are actually quite decently written -- she went OC a couple of years back and typed them using Wordstar.  But her handwritten recipes...

They drive me nuts.

Mama's handwriting is almost the same as mine, because we both come from that high school that teaches all its students to write the same.  But for some reason... I just don't get some of the words!  And if I do get the words... I don't understand what they mean!  For example... here's something that was completely alien to me:

Except for egg whites dont invert pan - don't grease - put cut rite.

That phrase can be found in her recipe for chocolate cake.  She told me the only reason I don't get it is because I don't know anything about cooking or baking.  Aba.  To prove that it's not just me, I asked a good friend who is an accomplished baker if she understood my mother's instructions.

She did.

Pfffft.  Not my fault I spent my entire freshman high school cooking class washing dishes and setting the table.  How was I supposed to know it was THAT important?  My groupmates let me get away with it!  Haha :D  I tried cooking in Palo Alto and the one time I cooked by myself, I was a miserable failure.  Hay. Maybe I'm not meant to cook or bake?

I should really learn though.  At least for future husband's sake.  If I end up with someone who can't cook, we're going to either:

1.  Get healthy with rabbit food (because the only thing I can do in the kitchen is microwave and make salads)
2.  Get fat because of take-out
3.  Starve.

God help me.  Paano ako magiging domestic goddess nito?????

:P

gets ko rin to :p the method makes the cake moist but not too 'oily/greasy'. it's never too late to learn how to cook, and besides - if it doesn't taste 'well', ikaw din lng naman kakain ;p practice lang yan

If you think you can't cook, I know someone her don't won't even eat her fried rice. Tell me if you can do worse? Hahaha!

Just practice, and it will all work out :).

Hehehehehe :P

Ay naku...I cook for "compliance" purposes only. And I claim to be the ultimate domestic goddess ha. Well, If I don't get it, I don't get it. I just find out where the best turo-turos are.

Yesterday, Dingdong came to the house for lunch and I burned the spareribs! Ugh! Kinain naman nya but before he left, he made me TONS of binagoongan. SARAP! Eh di may ulam na kami for the next few days.

HAHAHA. nez! your so funny. in cooking class i also always got away with table setting! hahaha :)
but baking following the mga 1-2-3 recipes, from scratch, not like the add eggs and water lang, is fairly simple :) i think i'd rather be a cookie baker than a cook. good luck :)

Manang - Tapos, itong si Mama, sabi pa niya na maiintindihan raw ng lahat ng bibigyan ko ng cookbook yung directions niya. Ako lang daw yung walang alam. Tss. I keep reminding her I'm giving the book to you, too. Hehehe :) Sarap naman ng binagoongan... request ako nun kay Maya... :)

Ri - Thanks, thanks. Yeah, I think I'd rather be a baker too. Much more scientific process. Hehe :D

Bing - OO! HAHAHAHA! Dishwasher, Inventory, Clean-up... basta hindi cook! Hahaha! The one time I was cook, we made daing na bangus instead. Hahaha! At least marunong ako maglinis ng isda. Hahaha :P
